Know your ride

California’s three e-bike classes

1

Pedal assist

Top assisted speed: 20 mph

No minimum age. Helmets are required for riders under 18.

2

Throttle assisted

Top assisted speed: 20 mph

No minimum age. Helmets are required for riders under 18.

3

Speed pedal assist

Top assisted speed: 28 mph

Riders must be 16 or older. Helmets are required for every rider and passenger.

E-motorcycles are not e-bikes. Legal e-bikes have operable pedals and a motor under 750 watts. E-motorcycles require a valid driver’s license with an M-1 endorsement, registration, a license plate, insurance and a DOT-approved helmet.

La Verne rules

Ride safely. Ride legally.

Riders must follow California bicycle laws and La Verne’s mobility ordinance. These highlights are a starting point; posted signs and the full ordinance still apply.

⛑

Helmets matter

Required for riders under 18 and everyone on a Class 3 e-bike. Recommended for every rider.

☾

Night riding

No one under 16 may operate an e-bike after dark. Bikes need front and rear lights plus side reflectors.

↔

Sidewalks and trails

Class 1 and 2 riders may use sidewalks where no bike lane is available, while yielding to pedestrians. Class 3 e-bikes are barred from sidewalks and public off-road trails.

●

Parks and stunts

E-bikes are prohibited in City parks unless a sign or designated path allows them. Wheelies and other stunts are banned on roads and sidewalks.
