Waste Management will take over billing and customer service for residential trash collection in La Verne beginning Sept. 1.

Collection schedules, services, and rates will remain unchanged during the transition, which the City says is intended to improve customer service, reduce delays, and streamline the billing process.

You may receive two trash-related invoices in late August or early September, but the City says you are not being charged twice. The final City utility bill covers July and August because the City bills after services are provided. The first WM bill covers September and October because WM bills in advance.

WM will automatically create accounts using residents’ existing information. You will receive your new account number on your first WM bill and can then create an online account at wm.com/mywm.

You should carefully review your first bill, including the description and quantity information to make sure you are being billed for the correct size and amount of containers. WM's standard residential trash and recycling carts come in three main sizes: 32-gallon, 64-gallon, and 96-gallon. Additional containers will now be itemized on your bill.

Monthly charges are:

• $12.25 for each additional trash cart
• $11.63 for each recycling cart beyond the two included carts
• $16.21 for each organics cart beyond the two included carts

If you want to keep your additional containers, you do not need to take action. If you no longer want them, you should contact WM to arrange removal.

Additional charges apply for more than two (2) recycling or two (2) organics containers. Residents may adjust their service levels if needed.

Be sure to check your first mail (hitting your mailbox soon, if it hasn't already). You will receive your account number on your first Waste Management bill. You can create your account and manage your bills at wm.com/mywm.

Bills may be paid by bank account, credit or debit card, check or digital wallets, including Venmo, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Wallet. A $1.99 convenience fee will be charged for credit card, debit card and digital-wallet transactions. Payments made through direct debit from a bank account will not carry a convenience fee. In-person cash payment options are available at participating locations, including Walmart. After the transition, La Verne City Hall will no longer accept payments for trash bills.

WM will waive late fees for the first two bimonthly billing cycles, covering four months.

➡️ Representatives will be available at La Verne City Hall 8 a.m-5 p.m. Sept. 3, 10, 17, and 24 to help residents establish online accounts and answer questions.

In 2019, the City Council authorized an agreement with WM through Dec. 31, 2030, granting the company the exclusive right to provide solid waste, recycling, organics, green waste, and related collection services for residential and commercial properties throughout La Verne. The agreement also establishes service requirements, rates and fees, regulatory responsibilities, performance standards, and payments to the City. Existing service levels, rates, and franchise agreement terms will remain unchanged with the billing transition.
