Southern California Edison plans to underground approximately 1.85 miles of power lines in northern La Verne to modernize the electrical grid and reduce wildfire risk.

The Avenida Circuit project includes overhead and underground electrical work along portions of North San Dimas Canyon Road, Golden Hills Road, Melinda Lane, Via Vista, Monterey Street and Stephens Ranch Road. The work is focused in areas considered at high risk for wildfires.

Undergrounding can improve reliability during high winds and storms by protecting electrical equipment from hazardous weather, according to the SCE project fact sheet. It also reduces the risk of outages and fires caused by vegetation, debris or metallic balloons contacting power lines.

Construction is expected to continue through the fourth quarter of 2026. Crews will generally work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Saturday work may take place from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Work will not occur on holidays or red flag days.

Crews will dig trenches and install underground conduits, cables, vaults and manholes. They will also remove existing high-voltage overhead lines and related equipment and restore asphalt after completing the work.

Residents may experience temporary maintenance outages, construction noise and intermittent closures of roads, lanes or sidewalks. Crews, surveyors and inspectors may need to enter private property to access utility poles or equipment. They may also trim or remove vegetation and trees.
