Local News Needs You

La Verne Daily News exists because I believe our City deserves a trusted source for local news and information. But it won't last long without your help!

Local News Needs You
I got to meet the amazing students and teachers of the San Dimas High School culinary team on Wednesday. Did you know they’re going to compete in the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore, April 24-26? Last year, they won first place! Story coming soon.

La Verne Daily News exists because I believe our City deserves a trusted source for local news and information.

I am building more than a newsletter or website—I'm building civic infrastructure.

Today (April 9) is Local News Day, a national day of action to celebrate and strengthen the journalism communities like ours depend on.

Local news isn't just a product to me. It's a promise to the community I call home. It's showing up to the city council meeting and the school board meeting, tracking down the answer to the question my neighbor has been asking for months, and sharing stories you won't find anywhere else.

If you believe in this kind of journalism, please consider subscribing to La Verne Daily News today.

Thank you to all my current subscribers and donors! 🧡

I’m deeply committed to providing news as a public service to our community. But here’s an honest confession: reporting is work. In fact, it's a full-time job to cover a community the size of La Verne.

It’s sitting through (sometimes very long) city council meetings. It’s driving to interviews, making phone calls, sending emails, and asking follow-up questions. It’s researching, writing, editing, fact-checking, publishing, posting, and responding. It’s being accountable to readers and showing up consistently.

If La Verne Daily News is going to be sustainable—something our community can count on for years to come—it needs resources. Passion alone doesn’t pay the bills. It takes $150,000 a year to produce local news, even when the work is published online rather than in a physical newspaper. This includes the cost of tools and technology, staff salaries, freelancers, marketing materials, gas, and mileage.

We all HATE paywalls, right?

I strongly believe local news should be accessible to all. I know not everyone can afford to pay for news, but by offering a paid newsletter subscription that provides a bit more than just news stories, maybe you will sign up to support access to local news for everyone in our community.

According to my ongoing community survey, a majority of people are willing to pay something for high-quality local news, with most indicating comfort at the $1–10 per month level—reinforcing my tiered-subscription approach. The way I see it, you're not buying access; you're supporting local community connection.

You can access stories on our website for free and receive a monthly roundup email of all the previous month's stories, as well as Notes From the Publisher, an email with occasional behind-the-scenes notes from me (the publisher) about the business, mission, and realities of producing local journalism.

As a subscriber, you get full access to the website and newsletter archive, plus twice-weekly email newsletters delivered to your inbox, and other subscriber-only benefits.

I am a proud member of the Tiny News Collective, which aims to support voices historically excluded from media and media ownership. La Verne Daily News is fiscally sponsored by The Tiny News Collective (EIN 85-3963369), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. You are donating to The Tiny News Collective, which will hold your gift in a restricted fund for the charitable purposes of La Verne Daily News but retains variance power in accordance with the fiscal sponsorship agreement with and FASB Statements 958-605-25-25 and -26. Donations to Tiny News Collective are tax-deductible as permitted by law. You should consult your tax advisor regarding the deductibility of your donation.

No single source does it all. Sustainability comes from balance.

My long-term goal is for La Verne Daily News to become a nonprofit, rooted in public service and community trust. I don’t need to make millions—or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Like most people, I simply want to pay the bills, save a little, and maybe take a vacation with my family now and then. I'd also like to offer paid student internships, hire another reporter, hire a business manager, and fairly pay freelance writers, designers and photographers. All in due time, of course.

Most of all, I want to keep doing this work—for you, and with you.

Because strong communities need strong local journalism. And strong local journalism needs support.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
