Southern California Edison restored power Wednesday night after a substation issue initially left approximately 6,700 customers without electricity.
The outage began at 4:28 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. All power had been restored as of 8:27 p.m., according to an SCE spokesperson.
SCE did not have a breakdown of affected customers by city. At 7:30 p.m., the utility reported that most of La Verne had been re-energized and approximately 1,600 customers remained without power, primarily in Pomona.
The cause of the substation issue remains under investigation. According to SCE, the investigation could take weeks or months.
A City of La Verne staff member told the La Verne Daily News Wednesday evening that the outage was linked to a fire at a substation on the Fairplex property. SCE has not confirmed the cause.
The outage temporarily affected the Hillcrest retirement community in La Verne. Residents reported that power had returned around 7 p.m. SCE confirmed Hillcrest had power in an email at 7:30 p.m.
The outage also disrupted service at some area gas stations. Pomona resident Eunice Vivas said power went out in North Pomona while she was pumping gas. "No power, no gas. I was able to almost fill up, but many others are leaving looking for where they can get gas," she shared in a direct message to La Verne Daily News on Instagram around 6: 50 p.m. Wednesday.
Customers can check the SCE outage map for information about current outages.
