La Verne residents have reported receiving flyers from a group calling itself the California Energy Initiative, and questions are mounting about whether the solicitation is legitimate.

The flyer, titled "Notice SCE Customers," cites California Public Utilities Code 379.6β€”the statute governing the state's Self-Generation Incentive Program, or SGIP, a real rebate program that helps homeowners offset the cost of home batteries and other small clean-energy systems.

SGIP is administered through the California Public Utilities Commission and funded by investor-owned utilities including SCE, PG&E and SDG&E. Eligible customers can receive rebates for installing energy storage technology.

All signs seem to point to this being a solar installation company marketing campaign. La Verne Daily News is working with Southern California Edison to determine whether the flyer is valid.

"This kind of thing happens all the time," an SCE spokesperson said, adding that some solicitations of this type are legitimate while others involve fraudulent claims. At the time of publication, SCE was not able to say whether the flyer circulating in La Verne is fraudulent.

An email sent to the address listed on the California Energy Initiative website bounced back. The Sacramento address listed on the website corresponds to an office location associated with LGCY Power, a residential solar company. La Verne Daily News has not confirmed whether the company is connected to the flyer. LVDN reached out to LGCY Power's vice president of marketing for comment.

LGCY Installation Services, LLC is listed in the SGIP Approved Developers list, and LGCY Power, LLC appears as a registered business with the California Secretary of State.

According to the California Business Bureau, the California Energy Initiative business profile is currently "under review." This means the business profile is "being evaluated to ensure it meets all the necessary standards and guidelines."

If you receive unsolicited flyers related to energy incentive programs, check to see if the installer appears on the Approved SGIP Developer List or contact SCE customer service at 1-800-655-4555 to verify its legitimacy.
