A Metropolitan spokesperson confirmed Wednesday afternoon that "all of the compromised battery cells have been removed" from the Weymouth Water Treatment Plant in La Verne and are being taken out of state.

According to the spokesperson, battery storage unit one is "completely inert and has been deemed no risk," an assessment confirmed by La Verne Fire Chief Brandon Coatney. "There is no more electricity in those modules," Coatney explained. "Inert means that nothing is being put off that would be flammable or in danger of igniting."

"Any battery cells from unit one that were not inert, were also removed and taken offsite," the spokesperson said.

The Metropolitan spokesperson also confirmed that battery storage units three and four, located on the south side of the Weymouth facility, have been "isolated and de-energized to a low level and are under continuous monitoring, consistent with the fire marshal's direction." "These are considered in a safe condition," the spokesperson said.

According to Coatney, the incident has been turned over to Metropolitan and its contractor. He said the fire department's only involvement with units three and four was "making sure that they had an active fire alarm monitoring the system."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
