In the race for California governor, Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra appear headed for the November general election. California's top-two primary system advances the two highest vote-getters regardless of party affiliation. As of Friday morning, Hilton held a narrow lead over Becerra, though millions of ballots remain uncounted statewide.
Closer to home, Bonita Unified School District's Measure A bond measure failed to gain voter approval. Preliminary results show about 46% of voters in La Verne and San Dimas supported the $256 million bond, while about 54% voted against it. Because school bond measures require 55% approval under Proposition 39, the measure fell short of passage.
Los Angeles County voters also rejected Measure ER, the Essential Services Restoration Act. The measure, which would have increased the county sales tax by one-half cent for five years to help fund homelessness programs and other county services, received 47.70% support and 52.30% opposition. The measure required a simple majority to pass.
Election officials will continue counting vote-by-mail and provisional ballots during the canvass period, meaning vote totals may change before results are certified.
