Public hearing Nov. 3 as La Verne considers water and sewer rate increase
La Verne residents could see water and sewer bills rise beginning in 2026 under a proposed multi-year rate plan with a maximum increase of 75 percent. City officials say the adjustments are needed to cover rising costs for imported water, infrastructure repairs, and operations. A Proposition 218 public hearing is set for Nov. 3 at City Hall. Residents may submit written protests before the hearing to share feedback on the proposed rates.

I’m diving in to some follow up stories around the topic of water rates, water management and water conservation. I had a fascinating conversation with Edith de Guzman, a water equity and adaptation policy specialist at UCLA’s Luskin Center for Innovation this morning about the research she and her colleagues have been conducting here in So Cal.

Paw Patrol: Humane Society Launches Door-to-Door Pet Licensing Checks
Starting Oct. 28, the Inland Valley Humane Society began door-to-door canvassing in La Verne to ensure pet owners are in compliance with state licensing laws. California requires all dogs over four months old to be licensed and vaccinated against rabies.
Representatives will leave flyers for residents who aren’t home and you will receive a notice in the mail letting you know you need to license your pet.
Licensing provides proof of rabies vaccination and helps reunite lost pets with their owners. During the Oct. 20 City Council meeting, IVHS President and CEO Nikole Brescian urged residents to license pets early to avoid penalties, which can go back up to three years.
Failure to license a pet can result in fines. In Los Angeles County, owners of unlicensed pets can be assessed a field enforcement fee of $40 per pet. For more information, visit the Inland Valley Humane Society website at ivhsspca.org/licensing.
How to license your pet
You can license your pet online, by mail, in-person, or over the phone. You will need to submit proof of spay/neuter and proof of rabies vaccination. Once the license application is completed, you will receive your pet’s license in the mail. Licensing fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Licenses are valid from time of purchase from one to two years.
For registered service dog licenses, download this form and submit to IVHS & SPCA.
